Medical Records

You may need to get copies of your medical records for a number of reasons.

The Privacy Rule gives you, with few exceptions, the right to inspect, review, and receive a copy of your medical records and billing records that are held by health plans and health care providers covered by the Privacy Rule.

The Omnibus Rule, effective 9/23/2013, “allows for the identification of labor costs for copying protected health information (PHI), whether in paper or electronic form, which can include a reasonable cost-based fee for time spent creating and copying the file”. Simply put, there can be a fee associated with the copying of your medical records, depending on the circumstance.
